In the bad old days, browser creators were a bit cavalier about HTML coding standards and the result was a proliferation of incompatible DOM's which lead to a rather chaotic situation. Different versions of the same website needed to be served according to the client's platform type, browser type and even its version. Even so, it was not unusual for users to complain about certain websites 'breaking' when browsed with particular combinations of browser and platform.

Happily, things have now settled down thanks to the efforts of standardisation bodies such as the W3C.
